Description

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), White Peony Root, Radix Paeoniae Alba, known as Bai Shao (白芍), is a fundamental herb prized for its ability to nourish the Blood, calm the Liver, and relieve pain. It is the root of the Paeonia lactiflora plant, peeled and dried.

Slightly cold in nature. Bitter, Sour in taste. It enters the liver and spleen meridians.

White Peony Root’s primary actions revolve around regulating the Liver and nourishing the Blood, which are central to many of its applications.

Health Benefits : Nourishes the blood, regulates menstruation, invigorates the liver, strengthening the spleen, anti-inflammation.

Nourishes Blood & Regulates Menstruation : White Peony Root is a primary herb for menstrual disorders related to Liver Blood Deficiency, such as irregular, absent, or painful periods. It helps address symptoms like breast distension, premenstrual syndrome, and uterine bleeding.

Calms the Liver & Relieves Pain : It soothes Liver Yang Rising, which can cause headaches, dizziness, and irritability. Its antispasmodic properties make it excellent for relieving various types of cramping pain, especially abdominal pain and muscle spasms. The classic formula Shao Yao Gan Cao Tang, which pairs White Peony Root with Licorice Root, is specifically used for this purpose.

Astringes Yin & Stops Sweating : Due to its sour flavour, White Peony Root has an astringent quality that helps control abnormal sweating, such as night sweats and spontaneous daytime sweating, often linked to Yin Deficiency.

Harmonizes the Liver and Spleen : When Liver Qi stagnates and invades the Spleen/Stomach (a common pattern in modern life stress), it can lead to digestive issues like abdominal cramping and diarrhea. White Peony Root is a key herb for regulating this relationship.

Modern Research and Applications

Modern science has begun to validate some of White Peony Root’s traditional uses. Its primary active compound, paeoniflorin, is widely researched for its effects.

· Anti-inflammatory & Immunomodulatory : Extracts of White Peony Root, known as Total Glucosides of Peony (TGP), demonstrate significant anti-inflammatory and immune-regulating effects, supporting its traditional use for rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune conditions.
· Analgesic Effects : Studies have confirmed its pain-relieving properties, which are not mediated by opiate receptors but may involve adenosine A1 receptors.
· Hormonal Regulation : White Peony Root contains phytoestrogens and has been studied for its potential to help reduce symptoms of menopause and regulate menstrual cycles.
· Neuroprotective & Mood-Supporting : Research suggests paeoniflorin has neuroprotective effects and may help alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression by influencing serotonin activity.
