Description
Black Goji Berry / Black Wolfberry
Hei Gou Qi · (黑枸杞)
Botanical Name : Lycium ruthenicum Murray
Category : Yin Tonic
Neutral in nature. Sweet in taste. It enters the liver and kidney meridians.
The most common TCM pattern behind premature aging signs with dry eyes and poor sleep is Yin and Blood dual deficiency, and Black Goji is prized for nourishing both simultaneously. Rich in anthocyanins, it may help address the deep depletion that ordinary Goji alone cannot fully reach.
A rare, nutrient-dense berry from the high plateaus of China. Unlike red goji berries, black goji is rich in anthocyanins and has become a trending superfood for vision, skin, and anti-aging support.
TCM Properties
Black Goji is indicated for: dry eyes with blurred vision, premature graying, poor sleep with vivid dreams, dry and dull skin, and lower back weakness. These signs point to a deeper level of Yin and Blood depletion than regular Goji addresses. The dark pigment reflects its higher concentration of protective compounds that target the deepest reserves.
Health Benefits
Nourishes Liver and Kidney Yin
Black Goji enters the Liver and Kidney channels, the two organ systems most associated with aging and deep vitality in TCM. Its neutral temperature and sweet taste make it gentle enough for long-term use. Regular consumption may help replenish the deep reserves that decline with age and stress.
Benefits vision and protects eye health
The Liver opens into the eyes in TCM theory. By nourishing Liver Yin and blood, Black Goji supports clear vision. Modern science attributes the eye benefits to high anthocyanin content, the same compound found in blueberries. The dark purple color of the berry signals its dense antioxidant profile.
Clears heat and supports skin radiance
Despite being a Yin tonic, Black Goji also has a gentle heat-clearing quality. This dual action makes it suitable for people who have both dryness and low-grade heat. Skin benefits may include improved elasticity and a brighter complexion.
Rich in antioxidants that combat oxidative stress
Black Goji contains exceptionally high levels of anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, and other polyphenols. These compounds neutralize free radicals that contribute to aging and cellular damage. From a TCM perspective, this aligns with the herb’s traditional use as a longevity tonic.
Commonly Used For
· Yin Deficient types with dry eyes and skin
TCM Interpretation: Yin deficiency often manifests as dryness in the eyes, skin, and mouth. Black Goji’s Yin-nourishing and moisture-supporting properties directly address these symptoms. The high antioxidant content may complement the TCM action at a cellular level.
Why Black Goji Helps: The Liver and Kidney channel affinities make Black Goji suited for the deep dryness that characterizes Yin deficiency. The neutral temperature allows daily use without aggravating cold or heat patterns.
· Blood Deficient types with dull complexion
TCM Interpretation: Blood deficiency in TCM often shows on the face as a pale or dull complexion. Black Goji nourishes Liver blood through its Kidney and Liver channel affinities. The antioxidant content may also support circulation and skin health from a modern perspective.
Why Black Goji Helps: The dark color of Black Goji reflects its dense nutrient profile. In TCM dietary therapy, dark-colored foods often nourish blood and essence. The berry’s traditional use for skin radiance aligns with both TCM and modern nutritional science.

Steep 10-15 berries in warm (not hot) water for 5 minutes. The water will turn a stunning blue or purple. Drink daily as a wellness tea. Avoid water above 60C to preserve anthocyanins.
Dosage: 10-20 berries per day for general wellness.
Preparation Notes: Use warm water below 60C (140F). Boiling water destroys the anthocyanins that give black goji its signature blue-purple color and much of its antioxidant power. The color change in water is a natural indicator of the active compounds being released.
Dietary Advice
Black Goji pairs well with other Yin and Blood tonics like red goji, longan, or walnuts. Avoid combining with strong stimulants like coffee or energy drinks. The berries can be eaten after steeping for full nutritional benefit.
