Description

Poria Cocos (Fu Shen)

Fu Shen · 茯神
Botanical Name : Wolfiporia cocos
Category :  Dampness Draining

Neutral in nature, gentle and suitable for regular use. It enters the heart, spleen and kidney meridians.

Drains dampness through urination, gently promotes fluid excretion while simultaneously strengthening the spleen, Calms the heart and soothes the spirit, support fluid balance without depleting minerals.

About 8% of people who benefit most from Poria fit the Phlegm Damp body type with Spleen Qi deficiency, where fluid retention, bloating, and mental fogginess combine. Poria is unique among damp-draining herbs because it also calms the mind, addressing the mental heaviness that accompanies fluid stagnation.

A traditional mushroom that drains dampness, strengthens the Spleen, and calms the mind and is often included in sleep-supporting formulas.

Poria acts like a gentle drainage system for the body. Unlike stronger diuretics that force fluid out rapidly, Poria slowly and steadily helps the Spleen process fluids properly so that dampness resolves at its source. Its unique added benefit is calming the Heart and mind, which is why TCM says dampness clouds the intellect, and Poria clears both the fluid and the fog.

TCM Properties

Drains dampness through urination

Poria is a mushroom that grows around pine roots, and its neutral, bland nature makes it one of the safest and most widely used dampness-draining herbs. Unlike harsher diuretics, it gently promotes fluid excretion while simultaneously strengthening the spleen, addressing both the symptom and the root.

Strengthens the Spleen

In TCM, a weak spleen creates dampness, and dampness further weakens the spleen. Poria breaks this cycle by both draining the existing dampness and supporting the spleen’s fluid metabolism. This dual action is why it appears in nearly every classical dampness formula.

Calms the heart and soothes the spirit

Beyond its dampness-draining role, poria has a gentle calming effect on the heart. For the mild anxiety and sleep difficulty that accompany spleen deficiency patterns, poria provides a grounding quality that is often overlooked but clinically significant.

May support fluid balance without depleting minerals

Modern research has noted that poria’s diuretic action differs from pharmaceutical diuretics in that it does not appear to cause electrolyte loss. This aligns with its traditional classification as a gentle, non-depleting dampness drainer suitable for long-term use.

Commonly Used For

People with water retention, puffy face, and heavy limbs

TCM Interpretation: These signs indicate fluid accumulation from spleen weakness. Poria drains the excess fluid while strengthening the spleen’s ability to prevent future accumulation.

Why Poria (Fu Ling) Helps: As a neutral herb, poria can be taken daily in congee or tea without the concerns of cold or hot herbs. It is one of the few dampness herbs suitable for all constitutions.

Those with worry-related digestive bloating and poor sleep

TCM Interpretation: The spleen is affected by overthinking and worry, which can produce both digestive bloating and sleep difficulty. Poria’s dual action on the spleen and heart addresses both the digestive and the emotional aspects.

Why Poria (Fu Ling) Helps: Added to congee with lotus seeds and Chinese yam, poria provides a daily food-based approach that gently addresses both digestion and sleep over time.

How to Use

Cook 10-15g in soup or congee. Often combined with red dates and Chinese yam.

Dosage: 10-15g per day in food.

Preparation Notes: Poria (Fu Ling) is neutral in nature, making it balanced for most constitutions. For tea, steep 5-10 minutes. For soup, simmer 30-60 minutes. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 12 months.

Dietary Advice

Poria is sold as sliced pieces or powder. Add a handful of slices to soup or congee along with Chinese yam and lotus seeds for a spleen-strengthening meal. Poria powder can be mixed into warm water or congee. For fluid retention, take poria tea with a small amount of coix seed. Avoid taking in large amounts if you have yin deficiency with severe dryness, as its draining nature may reduce needed fluids.
