Description

“Honey Glazed Licorice” is a processed product in traditional Chinese medicine, made by roasting raw licorice with honey. Licorice itself is a common Chinese herbal medicine, with the effects of tonifying the spleen and replenishing qi, clearing away heat and detoxifying, removing phlegm and relieving cough, relieving pain, and harmonizing various medicines. Roasted licorice is made by roasting raw licorice with honey, making its medicinal properties milder and enhancing its tonic effect. It is especially suitable for symptoms such as weak spleen and stomach, qi deficiency and fatigue.

Precautions

Long-term and large-scale use of licorice may cause edema, increased blood pressure, sodium retention, decreased blood potassium, limb weakness, spasm and numbness, dizziness, headache and other adverse reactions. Therefore, it should be used under the guidance of a doctor.

Patients with various edema, kidney disease, hypertension, hypokalemia, congestive heart failure, diabetic patients and pregnant women should use it under the guidance of a doctor.

Contraindications :

1. Contraindications for Chinese medicine :

  • Licorice is incompatible with seaweed, Euphorbia, and Ginseng.
  • It is incompatible with Polygala; it should not be used with deer antler.

2. Contraindications for Chinese and Western medicine:

  • It should not be used with alkaloids such as quinine, atropine, and ephedrine hydrochloride, as precipitation may occur and the absorption of the drug may be reduced.
  • It should not be used with cardiac glycosides, as cardiac glycoside poisoning may occur.
  • It should not be used with potassium-excreting diuretics, as hypokalemia may occur.
  • The corticosteroid-like effect of licorice can antagonize the effects of hypoglycemic drugs, so it should not be used together.
  • It is not suitable to be used with aspirin, sodium salicylate, etc., as it can induce or aggravate gastrointestinal ulcers.
  • It is not suitable to be used with adrenal cortex hormones, as it will aggravate the side effects of hormones.
  • Licorice contains glycyrrhetinic acid, which is easy to react with the antihypertensive drug reserpine, thereby reducing the efficacy of the drug.
  • Licorice has an antagonistic effect on chloral hydrate and physostigmine, so it is not suitable to be used together;
  • Licorice has a glucocorticoid-like effect that can cause a decrease in blood potassium, and its use with thiazide diuretics will increase the risk of hypokalemia and paralysis. It can inhibit the activity of pancreatic enzymes and reduce the digestive effect of pancreatic enzymes on proteins, so it is not suitable to be used together.
3. Dietary taboos: Avoid pork, pine needles, seaweed and pufferfish.

[How to eat roasted licorice] 

① Roasted licorice soup

Ingredients: 10g of roasted licorice, 5g of dried tangerine peel & 5 red dates

▲Method:

  • Wash the roasted licorice, dried tangerine peel, red dates and put them in the pot;
  • Add 500 ml of water and boil, then simmer for 30 minutes, filter the residue and drink.
  • Moistens the middle and harmonizes the qi.

 

② Roasted Licorice Heart-nourishing Tea

Ingredients: 5g roasted licorice, 3 red dates, 10g longan flesh

▲ Method: 

  • Wash the roasted licorice, red dates and longan flesh and put them in the teapot; 
  • Add hot water and simmer for 10 minutes before drinking.

③ Roasted Licorice and Grapefruit Tea

Ingredients: 5g roasted licorice, appropriate amount of grapefruit sauce, appropriate amount of honey

▲ Method:

  • Boil roasted licorice in water to extract juice, and pour it into a cup after cooling; 
  • Add grapefruit sauce and honey and stir evenly.

④ Roasted Licorice Porridge

Ingredients: 5g roasted licorice, 50g rice, appropriate amount of wolfberry
